DECONSTRUCTING RELATIONSHIPS 201

The Deconstructing Relationships Communication Technique

(Pre-requisite: Deconstructing Relationships 101 or sufficient familiarity with the core fear and chief defense principles.

In part two of our Deconstructing Relationships Series, we build on the insight of how the core fear and chief defense have knocked our relationships off course. We then begin the first exercise for resolving the problem: the Deconstructing Relationships Communication Technique.

This powerful new strategy gets at the heart of any relationship struggle by seeing how our core fear and that of our partner has been triggered, as well as how our mutual chief defenses have set the pattern for never-ending conflict, anxiety or hopelessness.  The Communication Technique then transforms defensiveness and attack into empathy and true compassion for each other’s pain.

You will see clearly that both of you have been struggling to be seen, heard and cared about.  By “doing the opposite” of the chief defense, you will bypass the responses that have continued the merry-go-round of attack and defense, freeing both of you to give and receive what you have been seeking for a lifetime!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

● Practice the techniques for finding the core fear and chief defense
● Describe the Deconstructing Relationships Communication Technique
● Utilize the Communication Technique with clients/patients

COURSE DESCRIPTION

(Deconstructing Relationships 101 (or sufficient experience with the core fear and chief defense principles) is a pre-requisite for taking this course)

Building on the principle that the core fear and chief defense drive relationship conflicts, this seminar presents a unique communication technique for their resolution.

When one sees exactly how the others’ core fear has been triggered in the interaction, and how their own chief defense contributes to repeated attack-defense cycles, the opportunity for a different kind of communication arises. The technique presented here is designed to translate the underlying message in the communication into a call to be authentically seen and heard. When both parties engage in this practice, anger, anxiety and helplessness can give way to empathy, compassion and forgiveness.

● The core fear and chief defense drive all conflicts in a relationship
● “Doing the opposite” of the chief defense is the key to resolving conflicts
● By speaking from the core fear underneath the chief defense, empathy and compassion become possible
● Stating one’s core fear underneath the chief defense suggests a specific request of the other that is vulnerable and without defense
● This affords the other person an opportunity to be equally defenseless, and to make their corresponding request
● When both people feel that their fear and request has been heard, a spontaneous impulse to meet each others’ requests can emerge

PRESENTER BIO

PRESENTER: TODD E. PRESSMAN, PH.D.

Dr. Pressman is a clinical psychologist and international seminar leader. He is widely known for his work with Deconstructing Anxiety, Transpersonal Breathwork and A Course in Miracles.

He graduated with degrees in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and Saybrook Institute. His books Deconstructing Anxiety: The Journey from Fear to Fulfillment, Radical Joy: Awakening Your Potential For True Fulfillment and The Bicycle Repair Shop: A True Story Of Recovery From Multiple Personality Disorder have all received high acclaim. In 1982, he traveled the world to study the great wisdom and healing traditions, including with a Zen master, a Jain family, a Zoroastrian high priest and a Sri Lankan firewalker. His education also includes an internship under Stanislav Grof, M.D. at the Esalen Institute.

With a background deeply rooted in tradition (he was groomed by a father whose teachers were taught by Sigmund Freud), he has integrated this wide-ranging experience into a new program of psychological development called “Deconstructing Anxiety“. His working model is based on Michelangelo’s ideal: to release the statue from the stone, the authentic Self from the overlays of imposed identity, into the discovery of freedom, joy, and fulfillment.
